Kitchen Remodeling Pictures

There is a lot of truth to the expression, “A picture is worth 1,000 words,” so in this article I would like to share some ideas for kitchen remodeling – in pictures.

When I started my home addition a number of years ago, we had a spiral staircase that was located between the kitchen and first floor bedroom. It was a basic metal spiral staircase with black diamond plate steel for the treads: functional, but not exceptionally beautiful. We had planned to keep it and convert the bedroom to an office area and use the old closet area as a walk-in pantry for the nearby kitchen.

Pantry cabinet

The pantry cabinet functions as additional storage in an odd-shaped space.

The planned addition upstairs to the master bedroom exceeded the square foot limit that can be served by a spiral staircase. This caused us to rethink our floor plan; the only practical solution was to install a standard stairway where the pantry was to be located. To create additional kitchen storage, I came up with what we call the “pantry cabinet.” This cabinet is a bit taller than your basic kitchen set at 45" high. It also fills in the mostly unusable space below the stairs. The large doors allow for ready access to the items inside, and the cabinet top provides an extra work area.

More Kitchen Remodeling Pictures

This second set of kitchen remodeling pictures is from a remodel I completed a few years back. The clients wanted to add some color to their kitchen space, but they also had a pretty tight budget. The existing kitchen did not have real cabinets, but rather some crudely built shelves with shutters and curtains used to hide the contents. New cabinets were not in the budget, but custom matching doors and a drawer were.

Before After

A tight budget can still allow for visual improvements, like new cabinet doors. Before and after.

As you can see from the above kitchen remodeling pictures, the goal of adding some color to a drab kitchen was indeed accomplished. The tile used was a mixture of Italian hard-glazed with some more rustic hand-painted Mexican clay tiles. The Mexican clay tiles needed to be trimmed just a bit to match the size of the Italian tiles, but there were just a few, so it went quickly.

Backsplashes: A Simple and Quick Solution

Not all backsplashes need to be so colorful, and a simple addition of new tile or stone can change the look of your kitchen. Here are a few examples of backsplashes that I added to some kitchens. The first is a simple install over existing drywall.

Neutral backsplash

A neutral backsplash can add to the kitchen without being distracting.

Challenging Installations

Not every kitchen has a perfect “ready-to-tile” wall behind the counter. One client of mine had a concrete wall that was already tiled. Removing the old tile would have been a messy and costly project. But it could be saved if enhanced. There was some nearby color that added to its rustic charm, so we installed a short row of Italian tile to tie the old to the new.

Tile on tile

Sometimes it’s easier to leave old kitchen elements and update them.

Another challenging install was in an adobe home. There, the back wall was irregular and the solution we came up with involved a short backsplash with a wood shelf installed on top. The choice of oak for the backsplash top matched the oak of the cabinets and added some continuity to the kitchen. The wood of the shelf was scribed to match the ins and outs of the adobe bricks, and it provided a shallow area for handy storage. On a return visit to this client’s home for another project, I saw that she was using it to store her spices.

Adobe backsplash

When there is no flush wall to work with, creative solutions are still possible.

I hope that some of these kitchen remodeling pictures have inspired you and started your creative juices flowing. The kitchen remodel of your dreams can be a reality. Whether you are knocking down a wall and doubling the size of the space or simply adding some color with a new backsplash, a little inspiration can go a long way.

Looking at kitchen remodeling pictures is a good way to get kitchen remodeling ideas. Whether your renovation will just involve an updated backsplash and new cabinets or it requires a major overhaul, including the kitchen sink, it’s a good idea to formulate some kind of picture of what you want.
