Built in 1912, the Central Library on Olive road just turned 100. To celebrate the occasion, Saint Louis, Missouri remodeling contractors are giving the centenarian a face lift. When the library was first open, a home for books of all kinds on every imaginable subject was a novelty. The original structure was designed by architect Cass Gilbert and funded by Andrew Carnegie, and became one of America’s great public buildings and an architectural masterpiece. Now, to bring back some of the excitement and grandeur of old, Saint Louis remodeling pros are conducting a $70 million renovation. The project will create 30,000 square feet of additional space, and will include a 250-seat auditorium. In addition, there will be an expanded children’s library, a room dedicated to showcasing new technology, and many technological and aesthetic improvements.
