Raleigh, North Carolina remodeling contractors recently discovered a number of hidden historic brick columns during a church renovation. In the First Presbyterian Church, currently midway through a project to restore and modernize its 111-year-old sanctuary, ornate brick columns with terra cotta capitals were discovered behind the sheetrock. The building was last renovated in the 1950s when a large gathering space was divided into rooms and sheetrock was put up, concealing the columns. But Raleigh remodeling pros say any time you work on such an old building you’re bound to find surprises – some better, some worse. The church plans on restoring the columns and featuring them prominently in the finished design.
